Trophies & Townscapes

The urban housing project was the first project of my Stage 4 year, and it was carried out with a group. We were tasked with creating a development and housing plan for one of the recently shuttered hospital sites across the city; my group was assigned the Glasgow Victoria Infirmary. The infirmary was a historic hospital that had served the local south side community for nearly 130 years. Throughout it’s life, many adhoc renovations and extensions had been done to modernise the old infirmary buildings. This created a disparate and ‘scattered’ look to the site, with random singular objects littering the hospital area.
As a group, we decided to centre the site regeneration on the creation of a cultural and social hub through a ‘South Side Cinema’ as well as the creation of a new street, intersecting the site, to connect the busy corner of Battlefield Rest to the entrance of Victoria Park. Housing, consisting of a total of 300 flats, as well as street level commercial and workshop space, and finally a few new public accommodations (such as a kindergarten) make up the rest of the site plan. The overall plan involved the reorganisation of the various ‘scattered’ objects (such as a pub, a monument, a small market place) into a cohesive new arrangement that works with the neighbourhood. This project was nominated by the MSA for the AA Scottish Student Awards ‘Urban Design’ category.
