Isle of Skye

This summer I participated in a student initiated live build project in the isle of Skye. This was the second year of the project, though my first time participating, the first year a hikers bothy was designed and constructed in 6 days. This year the aims were more ambitious, we planned on building a composting toilet and a covered outdoor space, we also planned to build our own bespoke furniture for the covered outdoor space and do some sort of welding.

The entirety of the build was done without using electricity or power tools and no concrete, we aimed to be as sustainable as possible. The toilet was designed as a tower, due to the rocky nature of the site, digging deep for a long drop toilet was not possible, instead we designed the drop to sit above ground and we also planned to include a shower. The covered outdoor space was designed to sit on the edge of the site, and take advantage of the natural rock wall as the backing wall to block the high winds that the site is subjected to.
